Urgency Drift is the slow substitution of urgency for importance — the process by which reaction speed becomes your operating default, so the loudest task wins your attention regardless of what actually matters.
What it is
Urgency Drift is not a time-management problem. It is structural. When nothing in your environment distinguishes what is urgent from what is important, urgency fills the gap by default — because urgency is louder, and louder gets answered first.
How it works
It runs as a loop: a fast response to an urgent signal trains the people and systems around you to send more urgent signals, which demand more fast responses. The loop sustains itself without anyone deciding it should. See The Urgency Loop and why urgency is a structural claim, not an emotion.
How to tell it is happening to you
Your calendar fills up but your priorities do not advance. You end weeks busy and behind at the same time. Everything feels urgent, and you can no longer tell real urgency from urgency that was imported from someone else.
What to do about it
You interrupt Urgency Drift by re-separating urgent from important on purpose, before the day starts choosing for you. The free Urgency Reset Framework is the seven-day diagnostic built to do exactly that.
This is one of the mechanisms diagnosed inside the Hidden Cost of Success instruments.
